Geely’s space-age plug-in hybrid SUV has a 19.1kWh battery pack, enabling a 1400-kilometre range by Chinese standards.

Chinese car giant Geely has launched its next vehicle, the Galaxy Starship 7 mid-size SUV.
It is sold under the space-themed Geely Galaxy sub-brand, which also retails the Australia-bound Geely EX5 electric SUV marketed in China as the Galaxy E5.
The Starship 7 appears to be heavily related to the fully-electric EX5 with similar dimensions and shared body panels – however it trades the EX5’s drivetrain for a 1.5-litre non-turbo petrol engine matched to an electric motor.
CarNewsChina reports the vehicle is offered with an 8.0kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery in entry-level variants rated for a 55-kilometre electric-only driving range on the less-stringent Chinese CLTC lab-test standard, while flagship versions move to a larger 19kWh pack with a 120-kilometre range.
With a full fuel tank and battery charge, the Starship 7 will reportedly travel up to 1420 kilometres with a combined fuel consumption of 3.7 litres per 100 kilometres.
Geely says the Starship 7 is based on the same GEA modular platform as its other models, including the EX5, which is a lower-cost derivative of the SEA platform used for the Volvo EX30, Smart #1, Smart #3 and Zeekr X.
According to the brand, the battery can be replenished from 30 to 80 per cent in 20 minutes at a maximum of 36 kilowatts on a direct current (DC) fast charger.
Available equipment in the Starship 7 is similar to the EX5, including a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13.8-inch head-up display, a 16-speaker Flyme Sound audio system, a single 50-watt wireless phone charger, and heated and ventilated front seats.
Pricing for the Starship 7 ranges between ¥99,800 ($AU22,000) and ¥132,800 ($AU29,000) in China.
Geely Automotive Holdings is the parent of the Geely brand, along with Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, and other Chinese-market-focused marques – while it owns 50 per cent of the Smart brand.
Geely has not announced if it will expand its line-up in Australia with plug-in hybrid models like the Starship 7, as seen with BYD which initially exclusively sold electric vehicles in Australia but now offers the Sealion 6 and Shark 6 PHEVs.
