Non-Type R versions of the Honda Civic hatchback have received an update with a hybrid-only line-up, revised styling and more tech – but the price of entry has climbed despite modest sales.
The 2025 Honda Civic hatch has moved to a hybrid-only line-up in Australia – bar the Type R – but the cheapest model now costs close to $50,000.
Due in local Honda showrooms this month, the updated Civic sees the previous entry-level VTi LX petrol variant replaced by a new e:HEV L grade, while the e:HEV LX continues in the small car line-up.
The new base hybrid variant costs $2700 more than the outgoing VTi LX petrol – now starting from $49,990 drive-away – or about $6000 to $8000 dearer than the most expensive Toyota Corolla Hybrid hatch.
Honda Australia markets the Civic Type R hot hatch as a separate model from standard Civic variants, with a similar model update for the performance variant still to be unveiled globally.
Hybrid power is now standard across the standard Civic line-up with a 2.0-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine matched to two electric motors – one to power the wheels directly, and the other as a ‘generator’ spun by the petrol engine to charge the high-voltage battery.
Combined outputs are rated at 135kW and 315Nm – up from 134kW/240Nm in the non-hybrid VTi LX – sent to the front wheels through a single-speed “fixed gear” transmission.
Fuel consumption for current Civic e:HEV variants is rated at 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle – almost matching the 4.0L/100km rating of the hybrid-only Corolla hatch.
Priced from $49,900 drive-away, the Civic e:HEV L is $2700 dearer than the outgoing VTi LX – priced at $47,200 since it launched three years ago – with some equipment differences and the addition of the hybrid system.
Over the previous VTi LX, the Civic e:HEV L loses its wireless phone charger, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and power-adjustable front seats, with these features now reserved for the e:HEV LX.
However, the e:HEV L gains some features previously exclusive to the e:HEV LX hybrid, including more airbags – front-centre and rear seat side-thorax – traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, the Honda Connect telematics system, and a heated steering wheel.
Rear seatbelt reminders have been added to the e:HEV L – in line with the $55,900 e:HEV LX – to achieve a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on 2022 testing, which applies to hybrid Civic models only due to their extra safety features.
The e:HEV LX is $900 dearer than before – and compares to between about $42,000 and $44,000 drive-away for a top-of-the-range Toyota Corolla ZR Hybrid hatch.
Honda Australia says the Civic has “improved front camera software”, but it has not detailed any changes to the Civic hybrid’s active safety suite.
All Civic hybrids have a revised front bumper and grille – with the fog lights deleted – plus aerodynamic improvements, and new Android-based software for its infotainment system with Google built-in services.
These include Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store for downloading apps – while Honda Connect has faster response times and a revised interface, in line with the latest-generation Accord sedan launched in May 2024.
There are two new colour finishes – Seabed Blue in a “limited quantity” for the e:HEV L, and an e:HEV LX-exclusive Sonic Grey borrowed from the Type R – as well as an updated 18-inch alloy wheel design.
The switch to a hybrid-only line-up comes as the Civic nameplate faces a 17 per cent sales slide compared to the same time in 2023.
Deliveries are down 1000 per cent compared to the same time five years ago, when it was available with a broader line-up priced from around $23,000 before on-road costs.
The 2025 Honda Civic e:HEV L and 2025 Honda Civic e:HEV LX are in showrooms now.
