The Peugeot 408 medium SUV has been updated for 2025, with the four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system replaced with a more traditional three-cylinder mild-hybrid
The 2025 Peugeot 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid has been announced for Australia, with the outgoing plug-in hybrid model being replaced by a traditional 48-volt 'mild hybrid' version – with a $10,000 lower price.
Peugeot has chosen to drop the 408 plug-in hybrid – which previously allowed up to 60km of electric-only driving before the 1.6-litre engine kicked in – instead opting for a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine in the latest version with a 48V mild-hybrid system.
While performance has been reduced from a combined 165kW and 360Nm on the previous model to 100kW and 230Nm in the new 408, the hybrid system provides 15.6kW/51Nm of assistance – and unlike most mild hybrids, it is capable of driving on electric power alone.
Peugeot claims combined fuel consumption of 4.7 litres per 100km and emissions of 107g/km.
The eight-speed automatic transmission has also been swapped for a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.
But whereas the outgoing model was priced from $67,990 before on-road costs, the new Peugeot 408 is now available to purchase from $57,990 before on-road costs.
Only one variant is available in the 408 range at this point – the GT Premium Fastback Hybrid – replacing the 20-inch wheels on the outgoing car in favour of 19-inch wheels, while adding wireless smartphone charging, 360-degree cameras, and a premium 10-speaker Focal sound system.
Whereas the sunroof was previously a $2000 option, it now comes as standard on the 2025 model – however, nappa leather seat trim appears to have been deleted.
Standard equipment includes a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, matrix LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, ambient lighting, and keyless entry and start.
The 2025 Peugeot 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid is on sale now with deliveries expected to begin in early 2025, offered in five colours.
