More than 50,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) were reported as sold in Australia in 2025, led by the BYD Shark 6 ute and other new entrants.

BYD has risen to become the number-one plug-in hybrid brand, with a 50.7 per cent market share from the Shark 6 (18,073) and the Sealion 6 (9055), the first and second best-sellers.

It was the largest growth of any fuel type in Australia, driven by 22 new models – and despite the end of the FBT exemption on April 1 – followed by a 15.3 per cent growth in conventional hybrids, and a 13.1 per cent growth in electric vehicle sales.

Petrol- and diesel-only vehicles declined by 1.7 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, in Australia in 2025.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was down 33 per cent in 2024 compared to 2024, with 4410 examples reported as sold, ahead of an update due in showrooms imminently with a greater electric-only range.

The GWM Haval H6, including the H6 GT, was the fourth-best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2025 at 2542, followed by the GWM Cannon Alpha ute (1371), which accounted for 54.3 per cent of its sales.

GWM entered the plug-in hybrid market at the start of 2025 with the H6 GT, followed by the Cannon Alpha, H6 and the Tank 500, which saw it rise to become the third-best-selling brand when filtered by fuel type.

Australia's best-selling vehicle, the Ford Ranger, gained a plug-in hybrid option in the middle of the year, achieving 1143 deliveries – fewer than the Shark 6 and Cannon Alpha – to represent a 2 per cent share of its 56,555 sales across diesel, petrol and hybrid.

New Chinese entrants, the Jaecoo J7 and Geely Starray EM-i, rounded out the top 10 plug-in hybrids with 1134 and 1066 sales, respectively.

The nameplates with the highest share of plug-in hybrid sales among their available powertrains include the Lamborghini Revuelto (64.4 per cent of two-door Lamborghini sales), the GWM Cannon Alpha (54.3 per cent), and the BMW M5 (49.2 per cent of 5 Series sales).
