The higher-power version of one of Australia's most affordable new SUVs has made an exit after less than a year in showrooms.
Chery has quietly axed the more powerful version of its Omoda 5 small SUV – the 2024 Chery Omoda 5 GT – after just over nine months in showrooms.
The Omoda 5 GT has been marketed on the brand's website as a "performance SUV" but it is just a higher-power 137kW 1.6-litre turbo variant of its small SUV, with more sophisticated suspension and the option of all-wheel drive.
Chery says the Omoda 5 GT was always meant to be sold for a limited time – although it did not state this when the car was announced in January – and production ended mid-year.
Drive has contacted Chery Australia to confirm how many GTs have been sold.
As it sells out its final stock, Chery is offering $3000 off the GT's regular prices of $38,990 drive-away with front-wheel drive, or $40,990 drive-away with all-wheel drive.
The $3000 'end-of-year bonus' is also being offered on the Omoda 5 BX ($33,990 drive-away) and EX ($36,990 drive-away), but not the recently-introduced FX variant ($27,990 drive-away).
Powering the Omoda 5 GT is a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developing 137kW and 275Nm – up from 108kW/210Nm from the 1.5-litre turbo engine in cheaper models.
It gains multi-link independent rear suspension – replacing a more rudimentary 'torsion beam' design – for better road-holding, as well as larger brakes (308mm ventilated front and 313mm solid rear, vs 283mm ventilated front and 263mm solid rear).
Additional equipment is otherwise limited to a GT badge, gloss black centre-console trim, and in the all-wheel-drive model, a full-size spare wheel rather than a space-saver.
