A fault with the fuel pump could cause tens of thousands of Hyundai i30 hatchbacks to lose power, according to the recall notice.
Close to 19,000 examples of the 2020-2021 Hyundai i30 hatchback have been recalled due to a fuel pump fault that could see the vehicle lose power.
The 18,634 affected vehicles are i30 hatchbacks stamped 2020 and 2021 models – though they may have been sold at a later date – and cover standard models with 2.0-litre non-turbo petrol engines, as well as the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol N Line.
The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: "Due to a manufacturing defect, the fuel pump impeller may become deformed under certain environmental conditions, interrupting the fuel supply.
"If this occurs, the engine could stall resulting in a sudden loss of motive power. A sudden loss of motive power whilst driving may increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users."
Drive understands Hyundai Australia has received warranty claims related to the fault, but that there have not been any safety-related incidents occurring on the road, at least locally.
A full list of vehicle identification numbers for the 18,634 vehicles involved in the recall can be found here.
The recall notice advises that owners of affected vehicles will be "contacted in writing by Hyundai Motor Company Australia," asking them to book an appointment with a dealer "to have the fuel pump impeller inspected and replaced, free of charge."
Owners can contact the Hyundai Customer Care Team by phone on 1800 186 306, or via the brand's website.
