The 2025 Chery Tiggo 9 seven-seat SUV has been spied in Australia ahead of its launch in the second half of the year.

Spotted in plug-in hybrid form by a Drive reader in Sydney, the Tiggo 9 will become Chery's flagship model when it arrives in local showrooms by the end of 2025, sitting above the Tiggo 8 Pro Max.

Australian showroom arrivals were previously expected in the middle of the year.

The international name for the seven-seat large SUV will be Chery Tiggo 9, but it is identical to the car badged Tiggo 8L in China – while the Chinese-market Tiggo 9 is sold overseas as the Jaecoo J8.

The Jaecoo J8 is one of three new SUVs from the sub-brand in Australia, and is closely related to the export-market Chery Tiggo 9 – but it is being introduced with five seats, while the Tiggo 9 offers seven.

Measuring 4810mm long, 1925mm wide and 1729mm tall with a 2770mm wheelbase, the Tiggo 9 is 90mm longer, 65mm wider and 24mm taller than the Tiggo 8 Pro Max with an additional 60mm between its front and rear axles.

The Jaecoo J8 is 10mm longer and 5mm wider but 19mm lower than the Chery Tiggo 9, with a 50mm-longer wheelbase.

Plug-in hybrid technology is likely for Australia, pairing a 175kW/385Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 165kW electric motor.

A plug-in hybrid version of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro has been confirmed for Australia, along with the five-seat Tiggo 7 Pro, but they are expected to feature a 1.5-litre system – not the Tiggo 9's 2.0-litre system.

The Tiggo 9 is also available with a non-hybrid 187kW/390Nm version of the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine matched to an eight-speed automatic, up 7kW and 15Nm over the unit in the Tiggo 8 Pro Max with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Inside, the Tiggo 9 includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and a head-up display, compared to the dual 12.3-inch screens in the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max and Jaecoo J8.

Available features include 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, electric door handles, acoustic windscreen and front window glass, brown leather upholstery, ambient lighting, a massaging driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 360-degree camera with a see-through view.

More details on the 2025 Chery Tiggo 9 – including pricing and specifications – will be confirmed closer to its Australian launch in the second half of the year.
