In what could be seen as a sensible move, BYD now offers the Seal EV and Seal 07 PHEV as complementary models in China.

Only now, BYD also offers an electric version of the Seal 07, seemingly overlapping the existing Seal EV sedan.

The 2026 BYD Seal 07 EV has been revealed in patent filings lodged with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

It arrives hot on the tail of an update to the existing Seal 07 PHEV, which was first launched in 2023.

The Seal 07 EV matches the 2900mm wheelbase and 1495mm height of its PHEV counterpart, along with the 4995mm overall length.

An update to the PHEV version of the Seal 07 saw longer front and rear bumpers extend the length by 15mm, but the only key dimensional difference is a 10mm wider body for the Seal 07 EV, compared to the 1900mm wide WPHEV model.

Compared to the electric Seal sedan sold in Australia, the Seal 07 EV rides on a 20mm shorter wheelbase, but is 195mm longer, 35mm wider, and 35mm taller.

Details contained within the MIIT filing reveal a 240kW single motor powertrain, but does not reveal if the Seal 07 EV will retain the front-wheel drive layout of the Seal 07 PHEV, or match the Seal EV’s rear-wheel drive format.

With a 240kW motor, the Seal 07 EV roughly matches the Seal Premium sold in Australia, with a 230kW single motor.

The capacity and driving range of the Seal 07 EV’s lithium iron phosphate battery are also currently unlisted, nor is there pricing for the new model.

While the overlapping positioning of the Seal and Seal 07 EV may seem unusual, in China’s medium sedan segment, BYD offers PHEV versions of the Destroyer 05, Seal 05, Seal 06, and Seal 07, alongside he electric Seal, Seal 06, lower-priced e7, and now the Seal 07.

As well as those so-called Ocean Series models, BYD also has a line of Dynasty Series cars, which are meant to be slightly more upmarket, with medium sedans like the Han PHEV and EV, Qin L and Qin Plus PHEV and EV.

With BYD already offering the Seal Sedan in Australia, it’s unlikely the electric version of the Seal 07 will be offered locally, nor any of BYD’s plethora of other mid-size sedan models.
