Ford has confirmed the 2.0-litre bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel will be axed from the Ranger ute and Everest off-road SUV in Australia.

The Ranger's single-turbo 2.0-litre diesel will directly replace the bi-turbo unit – and expand into the Everest for the first time – while there will be expanded availability of the V6 diesel powertrain for both models, Ford Australia said.

Due in Australia in the first half of 2026, the revised 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel will receive the bi-turbo's 10-speed automatic transmission instead of its current six-speed unit, along with a new fuel injection system and timing chain.

Ford claims the revisions will enable "improved durability and performance", likely with a power boost from the existing 125kW/405Nm, though it is unlikely to match the bi-turbo's 154kW and 500Nm.

In the Everest, the single-turbo 2.0-litre unit will compete with the Isuzu MU-X's new entry-level 2.2-litre diesel, which produces 120kW and 400Nm and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

"In a significant move for work and fleet customers, the sought-after 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel will now be offered on a wider range of models, which will be the subject of a future announcement," Ford Australia said in a media release.

There will be no changes to the Ranger Raptor's 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol and the Ranger PHEV's 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

Ford introduced the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel – which is included in its 'EcoBlue' engine family – into the Ranger and Everest ranges in 2018 to replace the ute's 2.2-litre 'Duratorq' unit.

The less powerful single-turbo version, with a six-speed automatic transmission, was added to the Ranger in Australia when the current-generation model launched in 2022.

Fuel consumption and emissions figures for the upgraded 2.0-litre diesel have not been announced, though it is likely to be more efficient than the current model, potentially meeting the more stringent Euro 6 emissions rule with AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid.

The Euro 6 standard will be mandated for all new vehicles sold in Australia from July 1, 2028.

Ford Australia will confirm additional details on the updated 2026 Ford Ranger and 2026 Ford Everest closer to their launches in the first half of next year.
