The Smart brand was once wholly focused on compact city cars, but the new Smart #6 is a large sedan with the biggest dimensions of any Smart yet.

The 2026 Smart #6 PHEV sedan has been unveiled in China, and marks a number of significant firsts for the brand.

The #6 is Smart’s first sedan, but rather than competing with Corolla-sized four-doors, Smart has leapfrogged the city car class and offered its longest production model yet – the first Smart over 4.9 metres in length.

At 4906mm long, the Smart #6 is just 53mm shorter nose-to-tail than a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but its 2962mm wheelbase is 1mm longer than that of the E-Class.

The Smart #6 is also longer than the #5 SUV, by 201mm, but shares the #5’s PMA2+ platform, along with cars like the Zeekr 7X, although it’s not the largest car to do so, with Geely’s Galaxy E8 sedan offering bigger dimensions still.

The Smart #6 PHEV is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol plug-in hybrid system with a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission that produces a combined 320kW.

Based on more lenient CLTC standards, the #6 is rated with an electric-only range of 285km, with an overall combined range of 1810km.

Fully-electric variants of the Smart #6 will follow the PHEV, starting with a 75kWh battery and 254kW single motor version, or available with a larger 94kWh battery and 271kW motor, both with rear-wheel drive.

The larger 94kWh battery will also be offered in higher-performance dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions, including a 438kW #6 Pulse, and the flagship #6 Brabus with 482kW.

The Smart #6 Brabus also claims the title of the most powerful Smart model yet, surpassing the 475kW Smart #5 Brabus.

Smart has yet to reveal the interior of the #6, however the premium positioning of the #6 suggests that it will use a version of the multi-screen dash design from the #5, itself related to the Mercedes-Benz Hyperscreen system.

Geely’s 50:50 joint venture with Mercedes-Benz for the Smart brand sees it manage engineering and production of the brand’s new models, while Mercedes-Benz handles design.

While the #6 takes the title of the brand’s biggest car yet, in 2026 Smart is expected to go back to its roots with the #2, an evolution of the compact two-seater coupe that the brand first launched with.
