VW Australia has recalled 716 examples of its 2023 to 2024 Volkswagen Amarok ute, citing a potential fault with the driver’s seatbelt which may not operate as intended in the event of an accident.

The affected vehicles are stamped 2023 to 2024 models.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing defect, the driver's seat belt may have been incorrectly anchored. As a result, the seat belt may not operate as intended.”

“In the event of an accident, if the seat belt does not operate as intended, the occupant may not receive the full protection of the seatbelt system. This could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants.

The recall for the Amarok appears to be related to a issue for the heavily-related 2022 Ford Ranger and Ford Everest, which were called back in April 2023 for an incorrectly assembled driver’s seatbelt.

The Ford Ranger and Ford Everest are manufactured in Thailand for the Australian market, while the Volkswagen Amarok is sourced from a Ford factory in South Africa.

Volkswagen Australia advises it will contact affected vehicle owners to have the work carried out, free of charge.
