The Volvo EX40 – née XC40 Recharge – has been updated with a new name, a larger battery with more range for the single-motor, and a flagship Black Edition variant.

The renamed and updated 2025 Volvo EX40 electric SUV has been detailed for Australia.
Formerly the XC40 Recharge, Volvo has changed the name of the model to match the nomenclature used for its newer electric vehicles: the EX30 and EX90 SUVs, the EM90 MPV, and the forthcoming ES90 sedan.
The EX40 will be followed in Australia by its Volvo EC40 coupe twin, which replaces the C40 Recharge name.
Drive understands the Volvo EC40 will launch in Australia in the first half of 2025, with local pricing and specifications still to be determined.
The XC40 badge remains for mild-hybrid versions of the small SUV, which is now six years old with no all-new model on the horizon.
Prices for the EX40 have not increased over the XC40 Recharge it replaces, with the entry-level single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant continuing at $76,990 before on-road costs.
However it has received a larger battery pack and an increased level of standard equipment as it is now exclusively sold in a new top-of-the-range Ultra Extended Range variant, replacing the previous Plus trim.
The 82kWh lithium-ion battery in the new Ultra Single Motor Extended Range RWD variant supersedes the previous 69kWh unit, bringing an 85-kilometre increase in its WLTP-rated driving range from 435 kilometres to 520 kilometres.
Newly-added features for the EX40 Ultra Single Motor Extended Range RWD include 20-inch alloy wheels – up from 19-inch in the Plus – a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a 360-degree camera, and textile and microtech interior upholstery.
Meanwhile, the price of the EX40 Ultra Twin Motor Performance AWD has been cut $4000 at $81,990 compared to the XC40 Recharge Ultimate Twin Motor AWD model it replaces, with no change to its standard equipment.
Volvo Australia has introduced a Black Edition model into the EX40 line-up based on the Ultra Twin Motor AWD, at a $1000 premium with black 20-inch alloy wheels, gloss black badges, and black suede textile and microtech interior upholstery.
The EX40 Black Edition AWD is exclusively available with Onyx Black exterior paint – while Ultra variants are available in a new Sand Dune beige finish, and Bright Dusk silver has been deleted.
It is unclear if Volvo Cars Australia intends to offer a Performance software pack for the twin-motor EX40 and EC40 – as well as the Model Year 2024 XC40 and C40 electric twin-motor variants – which sees a 25kW power boost to 325kW in some markets.
The 2025 Volvo EX40 electric SUV is on sale now in Australia.
