The fault with an incorrectly-installed light bar on genuine-accessory bullbars could cause a loss of power steering assistance, according to the recall notice.
Toyota Australia has recalled 13,390 examples of the latest-generation 2025-2026 HiLux ute, citing a potential fault with the electric power steering module.
The recall notice, published on Toyota Australia's website, reads: "Affected HiLux vehicles have been fitted with a Toyota Genuine Accessory bull bar or nudge bar with light bar on which the wiring harness may have been incorrectly installed.
"This can compromise the earth connection to the Electric Power Steering (EPS) module, potentially resulting in the EPS becoming inoperative.
"The loss of power steering assistance will increase the steering effort at low speeds which may potentially increase the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users."
For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will inspect and, if required, correct the EPS earth terminal orientation, free of charge to owners.
Inspection and correction will take approximately 30 minutes, though owners may be required to leave their cars at dealers for longer, depending on the service centre's work schedule.
A full list of vehicle identification numbers for the 13,390 vehicles involved in the recall can be found here.
Toyota Australia says that the fault does not generate any warning alerts, so it is best to contact your nearest dealer to have your vehicle inspected and the problem rectified.
