The cheapest 2025 GWM Tank 300 in Australia – the $45,990 drive-away Lux petrol – has been removed from the brand's website due to a stock shortage, with customers being directed towards the diesel model instead.

A GWM Australia spokesperson told Drive the brand does not "currently have stock on Lux Petrol," but it is confident in the Tank 300's current supply following the launch of a diesel powertrain in February.

The Tank 300 diesel – available in Lux and Ultra grades – has accounted for 60 per cent of sales since it launched about two months ago, with the remaining 40 per cent split between petrol and hybrid variants.

It is currently unclear when stock of the Tank 300 Lux petrol will return to Australia, or if GWM Australia is considering removing the variant in favour of the diesel, which offers an increased 3000-kilogram braked towing capacity and reduced fuel consumption.

Diesel versions of the GWM Tank 300 are also rated with a higher payload – 600kg, up from 397kg for the petrol and 420kg for the hybrid – while the Lux diesel mirrors the hybrid's equipment list, with more standard features than the Lux petrol.

Added features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, DAB+ digital radio, built-in satellite navigation, telematics app support, automatic up/down for all four windows, a second-row child monitor, and front cross-traffic alert.

The recently-added 2.4-litre turbo-diesel Tank 300 Lux will open the off-road SUV's range in the interim, at $47,990 drive-away.

The Lux variant is now limited to the 135kW/480Nm diesel – which is shared with the Cannon and Cannon Alpha utes – and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol hybrid currently available for $50,990 after special offers.

However, the top-of-the-range Tank 300 Ultra remains available with the non-hybrid 162kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol for $49,990.

Diesel and petrol-electric hybrid versions of the Ultra are currently being offered at $51,990 and $55,990, respectively.

GWM says the national drive-away offers for Tank 300 hybrid models are $5000 off their usual prices of $55,990 for the Lux and $60,990 for the Ultra, with the end-of-financial-year offer valid until June 30, 2025, unless extended.

Combined fuel consumption is rated at 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres for the standard petrol for a CO2 rating of 218 grams per kilometre, while the hybrid is rated at 8.4L/100km and 196g/km.

The Tank 300 diesel is rated at 7.8L/100km and 205g/km, with its 3000-kilogram braked towing capacity and body-on-frame construction allowing it to be categorised as a "heavy off-road passenger vehicle" under the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).

Under the NVES policy, which started on January 1, 2025, vehicles of this type are included in the Type 2 category – along with utes and vans – with less-stringent emissions targets than Type 1.

The Tank 300 petrol and hybrid fall under the stricter Type 1 category – which applies to passenger vehicles and other SUVs – because they cannot tow at least 3000kg.

An update for the GWM Tank 300 recently debuted in China with a revised interior.

For 2025, the headline emissions target – which scales up and down based on a vehicle's mass, including a full tank of fuel and all fluids – for Type 1 vehicles is 141g/km, while the Type 2 limit is 210g/km.
