BYD has announced Australia's cheapest station wagon alongside a cut-price Toyota Camry Hybrid rival, due in showrooms later this year.
BYD will undercut the Toyota Camry Hybrid with the Seal 6, a new plug-in hybrid sedan and wagon promising more than 1300km on a tank of fuel.
Unrelated to the electric BYD Seal sedan – which remains on sale – the Seal 6 is similar in size to a Camry or Mazda 6, and is the fifth plug-in hybrid sold by BYD in Australia.
Prices start from $34,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Seal 6 Sedan Essential, and rise to $39,990 plus on-roads for the Seal 6 Touring Premium wagon, with a longer electric-only driving range and a more practical body.
The sedan undercuts the cheapest Toyota Camry Hybrid ($39,990 plus on-roads) – which, unlike the BYD, cannot run on electric power alone – and is the country's second-cheapest plug-in hybrid, behind only BYD's Sealion 5 ($33,990).
Meanwhile, the Touring becomes the most affordable wagon on sale in Australia, slotting in below the Skoda Octavia Select MHEV ($43,990 plus on-roads).
Powering the Seal 6 is a 1.5-litre non-turbo petrol engine matched with an electric motor and either a 10.1kWh battery in the Sedan Essential, or a 19kWh battery in the Touring Premium.
BYD claims a 55km electric-only driving range and estimated 1400km-plus hybrid range in the former, or 100km electric and 1300km-plus hybrid range in the latter.
Australian government documents show the engines in both variants produce 70kW, with the Essential pairing it with a 120kW electric motor for 130kW combined, and the Premium a 160kW electric motor for 163kW combined.
Features available in certain model grades include an 8.8-inch instrument display, a 12.8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and, in the wagon, a power tailgate.
A suite of advanced safety features will be standard across the range, including adaptive cruise control, lane-centring assist, blind-spot monitoring, and child presence detection.
More details of the 2026 BYD Seal 6 are due when orders open this Thursday, 9 April 2026.
Showroom arrivals are expected to commence closer to the middle of this year.
