MG's rival to mainstream electric family SUVs – including the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7 and Zeekr 7X – has been officially confirmed for Australia, at last.

The local confirmation of the 2026 MG S6 EV has been a long time coming, as patent images of the new electric SUV emerged in May 2025, followed by Australian government approval and a five-star Euro NCAP crash-test score – all before it officially debuted in the UK.

On display at last weekend's Melbourne motor show, MG Australia has yet to announce launch timing for the S6 EV, but it is expected to arrive in local showrooms around the middle of this year.

Australian pricing and specifications are also yet to be confirmed, however, the brand said it expects to offer single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations.

The S6 EV is based on MG's dedicated Modular Scalable Platform for electric cars, shared with the MG 4, S5 EV and Cyberster – compared with the front-wheel-drive architecture of the new MG 4 Urban, and separate underpinnings of its MG IM5 and IM6 electric models.

It is expected to slot between the MG S5 EV and MG IM6 electric SUVs, which currently start at $40,990 and around $65,000 drive-away, respectively, with the S6 EV likely starting from around $50,000.

A circa-$50,000 starting price would undercut most rear-wheel-drive electric family SUVs currently on sale in Australia, including the Mazda CX-6e (from $53,990), BYD Sealion 7 (from $54,990), Zeekr 7X (from $57,900) and Tesla Model Y (from $58,900).

Australian government approval documents, initially submitted in May 2025, list a 62.2kWh battery and rear-wheel-drive configuration, along with a larger 77kWh battery with rear- or all-wheel-drive.

The 77kWh rear-wheel-drive version has a 530-kilometre WLTP driving range rating, while the all-wheel-drive version steps up to a 484 kilometre figure.

Standard features are expected to include a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a suite of active safety features.

Higher-spec grades are likely to add 20-inch wheels, a fixed glass roof with an electric blind, more speakers, and a wireless smartphone charger, if UK specifications are a guide for Australia.

More details on the 2026 MG S6 EV – including Australian launch timing, pricing and specifications – will be confirmed closer to its launch, expected around the middle of this year.
