The latest electric car from MG is a family SUV that claims a longer range than a comparable Tesla Model Y RWD for up to about $16,000 less.

The 2026 MG S6 EV electric family SUV will match a similarly-equipped Geely EX5 on price – for a larger car with a longer range – when it arrives in showrooms imminently, from $49,990 drive-away.
The S6 EV is the company's latest competitor to the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7 in the mid-size electric SUV category, slotting between the smaller S5 EV and larger, more luxury-oriented IM6 in the MG line-up.
It is priced from $49,990 drive-away with rear-wheel drive and a 530km claimed driving range, or $56,990 drive-away with all-wheel drive and a 485km claimed range, both with similar standard features.
The entry-level variant is about $11,700 to $15,800 cheaper than a Tesla Model Y RWD, and $7000 to $10,800 less than a BYD Sealion 7 RWD, both with larger footprints but shorter ranges (466km and 482km, respectively).
The S6 EV Essence RWD is close in price to a top-spec Geely EX5 Inspire (about $47,800 to $50,900 drive-away), which sports similar features but a slightly smaller body and only a 450km claimed range.
At 4708mm long, 1912mm wide and 1664mm tall, the S6 EV shares its platform with the MG S5 EV ($38,990 to $46,990 drive-away), rather than the larger, 875-volt IM6 ($60,990 to $77,990 drive-away).
The Essence RWD drives the rear wheels with a single 180kW/350Nm electric motor, while the AWD uses one motor on each axle for 266kW/540Nm combined and all-wheel drive.
MG claims zero to 100km/h acceleration times of 7.3 and 5.1 seconds, respectively.
The 77kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack on board claims driving ranges in European WLTP testing of 530km with rear-wheel drive, or 485km with all-wheel drive.
It is claimed to recharge from 10 to 80 per cent full in 38 minutes at up to 144kW, while a heat pump and adjustable regenerative braking – including a 'one-pedal' setting – are standard.
Boot space is quoted at 581 litres behind the rear seats, with the aid of front storage rated at 86 litres with RWD, or 67 litres with AWD.
Standard features in both Essence variants include 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a 12.8-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch instrument display, wireless phone charging, heated and ventilated front seats, and synthetic leather-look and suede upholstery.
The AWD adds a panoramic roof, with other features shared with the RWD.
