Images of what has been claimed to be the first-ever electric BMW M3 have surfaced online ahead of its global reveal due early next year.

Photos posted across social media show a much more aggressive look than the regular BMW i3 sedan, with a diamond-shaped design under the grille, and a large air intake split by a section of bodywork.

Two sets of 'ice cube' style fog lights sit on the corners of the bumper, where the petrol model's air curtains would usually sit.

The leaked images also feature what looks to be a large black air vent in the centre of the bonnet.

However, doubt has been cast on the accuracy of the photos, as the car shown does not look any wider than the regular i3, and the mirror caps lack the aerodynamic fin seen on all other M models.

BMW has confirmed the electric M3 – expected to be sold alongside a new-generation petrol version – will use four electric motors, one on each wheel, for more precise control of torque.

A battery pack with a capacity between 100kWh and 108.7kWh will be fitted, unique to M models, to increase power, complemented by simulated gear shifts and engine sounds.

A power output for the electric M3 has not been confirmed, but the electric motors are believed to have a theoretical maximum output of 1000kW.

BMW M CEO Frank van Meel said synthesised driving sounds are key to making an electric car exciting to drive.

“If you have no sound, it's really difficult to drive a car. In order to be connected to the car on the road, you need to know how quickly you are without having to look down at your speedometer,” van Meel said.

“So you need to have an acoustic feedback, and you need some kind of gears or ratios if you drive in one gear from zero to 300, and you have no acoustic feedback, that might be a little bit complicated to judge how quick you [are going].”

The electric BMW M3 is reportedly due to commence production in early 2027.
