2027 GWM Haval H6 and H7 SUVs set for overhauls in Australia

GWM's family SUV range is set for a major shake-up in the next 12 to 18 months, with the current H6 and H7 both expected to be replaced by new-generation models in Australia, plus the addition of the value-focused Jolion Max.

The fourth-generation 2027 GWM Haval H6 has been confirmed as the global-market version of the Haval Xiaolong Max, which went on sale in China in 2023 but received a comprehensive update last year.

Australian showroom arrivals for the 2027 Haval H6 are due early next year, according to GWM Australia.

Meanwhile, the current GWM Haval H7 hybrid – launched in Australia less than 12 months ago – is likely to have a short life in Australia, as a new-generation model with seven seats and plug-in hybrid power is already under consideration.

Based on the Chinese-market Haval Raptor and Raptor Plus, the new H7, unveiled at the 2026 Beijing motor show, will be offered globally in an extended-length seven-seat configuration, along with a shorter five-seater.

The seven-seat H7 would become GWM's first car-like, monocoque seven-seat model in Australia, as the Tank 500 is based on a ute-like, body-on-frame chassis.

It features a similar, squared-off design to the Tank 300 five-seat off-road SUV, including a side-opening tailgate with an externally mounted full-size spare wheel – however it is based on a similar chassis to the H6.

The new-generation Haval H6 will join the value-focused Haval Jolion Max plug-in hybrid and electric mid-size SUV, due in Australia later this year, along with the coupe-styled H6 GT.

GWM Australia product planning manager Tim Leong told Drive the H6 GT is counted as a separate model, and it will live on alongside the new-generation H6 – though the petrol-only version has entered run-out, with the plug-in hybrid set to continue.

Compared with the current H6, the new model is longer and wider, with an extended wheelbase, for improved passenger space.

Measuring 4780mm long, 1895mm wide and 1730mm tall, with a 2800mm wheelbase, the new H6 is 77mm longer, 9mm wider and no taller, with a 62mm longer wheelbase.

A potential rival to the Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X-Trail and Mahindra XUV700 seven seaters, the H7 is 20mm longer, 55mm wider and 113mm taller than the new H6 – and 95mm longer than the current H7 – but has a 62mm shorter wheelbase.

A 436-litre luggage capacity for the new H6 and 586 litres for the new, seven-seat H7 are listed in overseas specifications, compared with 560 litres for the current H6 and 483 litres for the current H7.

Petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid options will remain available to GWM Australia for the H6, however, the brand is considering whether to continue offering non-hybrid versions due to Australia's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which is set to tighten further from 1 January, 2027.

The 2027 H6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) features 23.7kWh or 33.8kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, compared with 19.09kWh for the current H6 PHEV.

New features include massaging front seats, a larger digital instrument cluster, a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, instead of six-way.

Australian details on the 2027 Haval H6 will be confirmed closer to local showroom arrivals early next year.
