Subaru's fourth electric vehicle is its first with three rows of seats, the 2027 Getaway, due in US showrooms by the end of this year.

The Getaway is the Subaru version of the new Toyota Highlander EV – the electric successor to the hybrid SUV sold as the Kluger in Australia – and is claimed to be the most powerful production Subaru at 313kW.

Australian plans are yet to be revealed, but given the Highlander EV is not planned for sale locally – and is not expected to be produced in right-hand drive – the Getaway is unlikely to reach local showrooms either.

Drive has contacted Subaru Australia for comment.

The first Getaway SUVs to hit US showrooms will claim "more than 300 miles" (483km) of range in US EPA testing from a 95.8kWh battery, capable of 150kW DC fast charging and a 10 to 80 per cent fast charge in a claimed 30 minutes.

It produces 313kW combined from dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, and claims to cover the sprint from zero to 100km/h in less than five seconds.

In 2027, the Getaway will gain a standard-range variant with a 77kWh lithium-ion battery. Driving range is yet to be confirmed.

A three-seat second-row bench will be standard for a total of seven seats, with the option of a six-seat layout via captain's chairs in the middle row. All come with a power-folding third row of seats.

The Getaway differs from its Toyota sibling with unique front and rear fascia designs, plus unique 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels. Flush door handles shared with the Highlander are standard.

Inside, the Getaway matches the Highlander EV with a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual wireless phone chargers, and a panoramic sunroof.

Heated front seats are standard in all variants, with more expensive models adding heated second- and third-row seats, ventilated front and second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel.

A broad suite of advanced safety features is standard, with autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and, in certain grades, front cross-traffic alert and automatic parking.

Pricing for the US market is due to be confirmed closer to the 2027 Subaru Getaway's launch in late 2026.

The SUV has not been confirmed for Australia, a similar story for the Getaway's sibling, the Toyota Highlander EV.

"Toyota Australia continuously explores opportunities to evolve our vehicle line‑up. However, we have no current plans to introduce the Highlander BEV to the Australian market," the company's media statement said at the time.
