The Audi A2 e-tron is due to be revealed in the second half of this year as a new entry-level electric vehicle for the brand, undercutting the Q4 e-tron.

It revives the A2 name first used on a radical hatchback sold by Audi in the early 2000s, which was one of the most aerodynamically-efficient production cars at the time, but was a commercial failure with customers.

The A2's revival was announced at Audi's annual media conference, alongside a teaser image of the car showing a silhouette similar to the 1999 to 2005 original.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said in a media statement the company has "listened", and will make the "entry into the electric Audi world easier and more relevant than ever."

The upcoming A2 e-tron will be built at Audi's home factory in Ingolstadt, Germany, and is expected to ride on the MEB electric-car architecture used by the Q4 e-tron SUV and other Volkswagen Group models.

If it is sold in Australia, which is yet to be confirmed, it would undercut the $84,900 plus on-road costs starting price of the Q4 e-tron.

The Audi A2 e-tron's driving range and performance figures are yet to be announced, but are expected to be released alongside the vehicle's design at its world premiere between September and November 2026.

Its closest rival is likely to be the Volvo EX30, as Audi's rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz do not offer electric cars as small as the A2 e-tron.

Audi launched 20 new models in 2024 and 2025, a path the brand aims to stay on for 2026, with its focus being on the A2 e-tron and recently-announced Q9 flagship SUV.
