Your mail and parcel deliveries are set to become cleaner and more silent as the 2026 Federal Budget has committed $40.5 million to fast track the electrification of Australia Post’s delivery fleet.

Currently, Australia Post employs delivery vehicles of various sizes, from electric tricycles, small and large vans, through to semi-trailers... and an Airbus A330.

The most common vehicles are Mercedes-Benz Vito and Sprinter vans, both of which are now offered with fully electric options.

Today, Australia Post operates over 5000 low-emission vehicles as part of its delivery fleet.

At its current entry price of $61,990 before on-road costs, a $40.5 million budget would buy more than 650 examples of the 2026 Renault Kangoo E-Tech.

To keep with the existing Mercedes-Benz lineup, it also equates to 400 electric eVito medium vans ($98,951), or about 380 larger eSprinters ($104,313).

Many businesses, including the major supermarket chains, are looking to electrified commercial vehicles for urban deliveries, as they tend to operate from a known distribution ‘base’ – which helps with charging – and don’t tend to travel huge distances in their ‘hub-and-spoke’ operations.

This budgetary support is designed to “complement National Competition Policy reforms with the states and territories to increase transport productivity and support the uptake of heavy zero emissions vehicles.”

There are currently 13 fully-electric vans available in Australia, ranging from the $49,990 (before options and on-road costs) Farizon V7E, to the $121,041 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter LWB, with the Kia PV5 set to become a significant player when it launches soon at $55,990 plus on-road costs.
