Lewis Hamilton confirms F1 movie sequel is in the works

After smashing the box office, Lewis Hamilton has confirmed the sequel to the F1 movie is currently in the works.

Speaking to media – including Drive – ahead of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion said the script is in development, though remain tight lipped on the estimated release date.

“We are already working on the script. We had our first meeting in the in the mid to late [part of 2025]. Me, Jerry [Bruckheimer] and Joe [Joseph Kosinski] are talking about different directions and different ideas that we could go with the script,” Hamilton said.

Though Hamilton acknowledged the global impact the movie had, the F1 movie producer said they’re not rushing the process and are working on getting it right.

“It’s amazing to see how big an impact it’s [F1 the movie] had, how many people loved the movie. I’m still getting texts from people who are still only just watching the movie and how it’s opened their eyes to what this sport is about, and it’s sent them down a rabbit hole,” Hamilton said.

“For me, sequels often aren’t always great. We’ve got a great team, we’ve got a great cast and great writers. We’re going to take our time and make sure we get it just the way it needs to be.”

When asked if he’s got the urge to take centre stage in the upcoming sequel, the 41-year-old F1 star said he prefers to be in the background but acknowledged how hard acting is.

“I don’t really have a desire to be on camera, I’ve had loads of opportunities to be in movies and I really like the idea of being in the background and it was an amazing experience from this [the F1 movie], it’s so much more enjoyable [being in the background] than actually being on camera,” he said.

“I know a lot of actors, and I really admire their craft, it’s such a hard business to be in and to take on these characters is such a challenge and I don’t know if that’s something I’d be particularly great at.”

Since it’s June 2025 release, the film has generated more than $600 million globally while also received four Oscar nominations for the upcoming 2026 Academy Awards.
