Artificial intelligence system Grok will be rolled out on Tesla Model Y and Model 3 vehicles in Australia.

The chatbot can " deliver accurate and insightful responses to questions of a wide range”, according to Tesla, helping drivers to set destinations, manage routes, and identify points of interest, through voice commands.

Tesla has confirmed the rollout will be phased, with Hardware 3 (HW3) equipped vehicles being the first to update, followed by cars with Hardware 4 (HW4), which include Model 3s produced since September 2023 and Model Ys built from late January 2024.

Eligible vehicles are required to have an AMD processor, an internet connection, and run software version 2025.26 or later for all Grok functions except navigation, which requires 2025.44.25 or later.

Tesla says the Model S and Model X are also compatible with Grok, but it is unclear if they were fitted with AMD processors in Australia before local deliveries ceased for 2021.

Launched in 2023, Grok was developed by xAI and embedded into the X social media platform – both companies run by Elon Musk.

Grok can be activated from a Tesla's steering wheel, once installed.

The Tesla Model 3 is available in three grades in Australia, ranging from the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, which is priced from $54,900 before on-road costs, to the flagship Performance All-Wheel Drive, priced at $80,900.

Model Y prices range from $58,900 for the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive up to $89,400 for the top-spec Performance All-Wheel Drive.

The inclusion of Grok AI has begun and will roll out in phases. Customers will be made aware that their vehicle can be updated through the Tesla mobile app.
