An initial auction will include combinations including 'PORSCHE' and '1234567', as seven-character number plates arrive in Victoria.
Seven-character number plates are now available in Victoria, but the first to get them will need to outbid all opponents.
In addition to an initial auction of 11 “prestige” combinations, there is an option to bid for the opportunity to have first dibs on any available, and approvable, seven-character combination.
Customisable seven-character plates are expected to be released to the general public in future, with the addition of an extra character over the current limitation of six allowing buyers of personalised number plates to create longer words and number combinations.
The seven-character combinations initially being auctioned off are MCLAREN, PORSCHE, FERRARI, 1234567, 6666666, 7654321, XXXXXXX, 9999999, 8888888, 111111, and AAAAAAA.
Winning bidders can choose to restyle their plate into any prestige plate colour option, which, in addition to standard black, currently includes brown, green, blue, pink, and red.
VicRoads CEO Giles Thompson highlighted an expected interest from custom number plate enthusiasts.
“Seven-character plates unlock a new tier of personalisation for collectors who value uniqueness and distinction,” Thompson said.
“This first release is intentionally small and carefully curated — designed for people who understand the value of being first. Being first — and choosing first — is the essence of this auction.
“The successful buyers will be among a very small group driving around with the first issued seven-character Victorian plates.”
The auction for the first seven-character plates will take place on 26 May 2026 online and in-person at Park Hyatt Melbourne. Those interested in bidding can register here.
