Volkswagen has launched its long-awaited play for the mainstream plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market in Australia with the local launch of its new Tiguan and Tayron eHybrid SUVs.

Spearheading the German brand's electrified push is a set of End of Financial Year (EOFY) drive-away offers valid until 30 June 2026.

The medium Tiguan 150TSI eHybrid Elegance opens the range at $64,590 before on-road costs, but is initially available with a $63,990 drive-away offer.

Stepping up to the more powerful Tiguan 200TSI eHybrid R-Line commands $74,550 plus on-roads, with a $73,990 drive-away deal.

For those needing more space, the larger Tayron eHybrid range mirrors this structure, though the combustion-engined seven-seat option is not available due to the battery being located in the boot.

The Tayron 150TSI eHybrid Elegance is priced at $62,390 before on-road costs, but drops to $61,990 drive-away.

The flagship Tayron 200TSI eHybrid R-Line asks $76,550 plus on-roads, or $75,990 drive-away during the EOFY period.

Both the Tiguan and Tayron PHEV models are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine combined with an electric motor and 19.7kWh high-voltage battery, and are front-wheel-drive only.

Buyers can choose from two mid- and high-spec trim levels, Elegance and R-Line, across both the Tiguan and Tayron eHybrid ranges.

"It's a $3000 premium for a plugin hybrid with a hundred-plus kilometres EV range, so we're levelling up, if you will, with the plug-in hybrid," said Arjun Nidigallu, Head of Product at Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Australia.

"The $3000 uplift really gets a lot of people into that eHybrid ... [if] they're more than happy to do away without the all-wheel drive and the seven seats, in the Tayron's case, to get all the benefits of the hybrid."

The Elegance grade features a front-wheel-drive 150kW/350Nm powertrain mated to a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG).

Standard equipment includes adaptive suspension (DCC Pro), keyless entry, leather-appointed front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions, and a 12.9-inch touchscreen.

Both the Tiguan and Tayron Elegance ride on 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Tiguan 150TSI Elegance claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 1.6L/100km and energy consumption of 13.8kWh/100km, based on lab testing that, in the former's case, favours the battery pack.

Its Tayron equivalent quotes a combined fuel consumption figure of 1.7L/100km and 14.0kWh/100km.

The top-tier R-Line grade turns up the performance with a 200kW/400Nm tune, also sending power to the front wheels via a six-speed DSG.

The R-Line adds 20-inch alloy wheels, R-Line interior and exterior styling, a larger 15-inch screen, and a 700-watt Harman Kardon premium audio system as standard.

The Tiguan 200TSI R-Line quotes 1.7L/100km and 14.1kWh/100km, with the Tayron 200TSI R-Line a touch more at 1.8L/100km and 14.4kWh/100km.

Both vehicles are backed by Volkswagen's five-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, which is not conditional on visiting only VW dealerships for logbook servicing.

The high-voltage hybrid battery is covered by a separate eight-year/160,000km warranty.
