The latest-generation MG HS has been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating for non-hybrid variants, becoming the second model in the brand’s line-up to receive a top score.

The non-hybrid version of the new-generation 2024 MG HS family SUV has received a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) under the latest 2023-25 criteria.
All 1.5-litre turbo variants of the MG SUV sold in Australia are covered by the ANCAP rating, which is based on testing conducted by Euro NCAP.
ANCAP said the HS received “strong scores” for its pedestrian impact testing, full points for its side-impact, oblique pole, whiplash protection and far-side impact tests, and ‘good’ protection of all critical body regions for child occupant testing.
However, protection of the pelvis for vulnerable road users was mixed with areas of ‘good’ and ‘poor’ performance, while the reverse autonomous emergency braking system in 4km/h and 8km/h tests was rated as ‘marginal’.
A ‘marginal’ result was also recorded for the chest protection of rear adult occupants in the full-width frontal test, while the HS was found to present a lower risk to oncoming vehicles in a head-on collision with a 0.98 point penalty out of 8.00 applied.
While the HS is fitted with a driver monitoring system – which includes a camera ahead of the driver to detect drowsiness – ANCAP did not award points as it did not meet the safety organisation’s requirements.
It is not fitted with a child presence detection system to alert the driver when occupants remain in the vehicle when the doors are locked, with no points awarded.
Overall, the MG HS scored 90 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection, 83 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 89 per cent for safety assistance.
Minimum scores of 80 per cent, 80 per cent, 70 per cent, and 70 per cent are required, respectively, to achieve a five-star rating under the latest ANCAP criteria.
“The previous generation MG HS achieved a five-star result against 2019 criteria. Our protocols have been upgraded twice since then, so it is positive to see MG continue to invest in the safety of the HS,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.
The MG HS' smaller SUV sibling, the new-generation MG ZS, will launch in Australia this month in hybrid form, with an ANCAP safety rating likely to be announced in due course.
