Chery's upmarket Jaecoo J7 pricing to position new SUV amid Chinese rivals, and below majority of Japanese and Korean competitors.

Australia’s newest car brand, Chinese-based Chery off-shoot Jaecoo, is still to confirm exact pricing of its mid-size 2025 J7 SUV, but has this week given a strong indication that competitive value will be key part of the brand’s positioning.

Speaking to media at the Australian pre-launch drive of the J7 SUV, the Jaecoo team indicated that the three-variant J7 range would start between $35,000 and $40,000 drive-away for a front-drive J7 Core.

This places the Jaecoo J7 in line with other Chinese mid-size SUV competitors like the MG HS and GWM Haval H6.

Jaecoo’s parent-brand Chery still leads the value stakes, offering the similarly sized (and identically powered) Chery Tiggo 7 Pro SE SUV for $29,990 drive-away, but the J7’s more upmarket cabin finishes and extensive standard equipment list align it to higher-grade variants in both the MG and GWM lineup.

Buyers on a similar budget who are shopping for a Japanese brand can still look at a Mazda CX-5 Maxx (from $36,590 before on roads) or Nissan X-Trail ST (from $38,025 before on roads).

Australia’s best selling car so far this year, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid starts from $42,260 before on road costs.

Korean brands start at $34,995 (before on roads) with the Kia Sportage S or $39,100 (before on roads) for the Hyundai Tucson 2WD.

The entry-level Jaecoo J7 Core features 13.2-inch portrait LCD infotainment touchscreen, support for wired Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, power adjustable synthetic leather seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a full suite of driver assistance technology.

Stepping up to the J7 Track (which Drive expects to be priced in the low $40,000 range) adds a power tailgate, 360-degree monitor, heated front seats, and an eight-speaker Sony-branded sound system. A full breakdown of standard specification is listed below.

Noting the pricing (all listed with current drive-away prices) of all Chinese brand competitors would place the J7 between the MG HS Excite and Essence and GWM Haval H6 Lux and Ultra, which largely aligns with the equipment and features on the Jaecoo.
