Deepal – another Chinese electric-car brand coming to Australia – has launched its first model, a battery-powered family SUV more affordable than the top-selling Tesla.

The 2025 Deepal S07 electric SUV will be the next mid-size electric SUV from China to challenge the top-selling Tesla Model Y in Australia, priced from $53,900 plus on-road costs.
Prices for the new S07 SUV from Deepal – a sub-brand of large Chinese car giant Changan – were announced at an electric-car show in Sydney ahead of customer deliveries expected to begin within weeks.
It costs $2000 less than the latest price for the Tesla Model Y, the nation's top-selling electric vehicle year-to-date, in its base rear-wheel-drive form comparable to the single S07 variant on offer.
The Deepal has a larger battery and longer driving range than its rival – 475km vs 455km in European WLTP testing – but it charges slower and is less powerful.
Deepal vehicles will be sold locally through traditional dealers at negotiable prices – rather than online at fixed prices, akin to Tesla.
It has appointed local Subaru and Peugeot importer Inchcape to help launch its cars in Australia, and it is considering a broader range of models – including the Prado-style hybrid 4WD badged G318 – to follow the S07.
Powering the S07 in Australia will be a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 160kW and 320Nm, connected to an 80kWh battery pack for a claimed 475km driving range in European WLTP testing.
DC fast charging is available at a peak of 92kW – nearly half what the base Model Y can achieve (170kW), and close to a third of a Hyundai Ioniq 5 (about 250kW) – for a 10 to 80 per cent recharge time of 50 minutes.
AC 11kW home charging is standard, and claimed to enable an eight-hour empty-to-full recharge.
Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, synthetic leather-look seat trim, heated and ventilated front seats, an augmented-reality head-up display and a 14-speaker Sony sound system.
The S07's 15.6-inch touchscreen can tilt by 15 degrees towards the driver or front passenger for better visibility, while akin to a Tesla there is no instrument display ahead of the driver, rather an augmented-reality head-up display.
Optional are 20-inch wheels – which are expected to join the order sheet a few weeks after the first deliveries – as well as premium paint.
The 2025 Deepal S07 is now available to order, backed by a seven-year/160,000km warranty on the vehicle – plus eight years/240,000km on the high-voltage battery.
