Ford has confirmed details for Australia's first plug-in hybrid van, along with its all-electric E-Transit Custom, ahead of local showroom arrivals by October.

Australia's first hybrid van is less than six months away from arriving in local showrooms, where it'll be joined simultaneously by its fully-electric twin.
Pricing and specification details for the 2025 Ford Transit Custom PHEV and 2025 Ford E-Transit Custom EV have been confirmed this week, ahead of the first customer deliveries due between July and September 2025.
Priced from $67,590 before on-road costs, the Transit Custom PHEV – the first commercial van to offer petrol-electric hybrid technology in Australia – costs $10,000 more than an equivalent diesel model.
MORE:
The fully-electric E-Transit Custom is a further $10,000 over the PHEV – or $20,000 more than the diesel – at $77,590, with the PHEV and EV models available in long-wheelbase Trend and short-wheelbase Sport grades.
Short-wheelbase Sport variants cost $2400 more than the long-wheelbase Trend – $69,990 for the PHEV and $79,990 for the EV – adding more standard equipment, but less cargo capacity with a shorter body.
While the Transit Custom PHEV is the first vehicle of its type in Australia, the E-Transit Custom will rival the LDV eDeliver 7 ($63,990 drive-away), the Peugeot E-Expert ($79,990 drive-away), the Volkswagen ID. Buzz (from $79,990 before on-road costs), and the Mercedes-Benz eVito (from $98,951 before on-road costs).
MORE:
The next-generation Volkswagen Transporter van is a twin-under-the-skin to the Ford Transit Custom – similar to the relationship between the Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger utes – and will offer diesel and electric power in Australia, with a plug-in hybrid also highly likely for local showrooms.
Plug-in hybrid Transit Custom variants feature the same powertrain as the Ford Escape PHEV – which was axed in Australia in 2023 – pairing a 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine with a single electric motor for a 171kW combined system output.
It is matched to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) automatic – instead of the eight-speed torque-converter automatic found in 2.0-litre turbo-diesel Transit Custom models – and front-wheel drive.
MORE:
Fitted with an 11.8kWh battery pack, the Transit Custom PHEV is rated to deliver a 54-kilometre electric-only driving range, while combined fuel consumption is rated at 1.7L/100km.
'Auto EV', 'EV Now' and 'EV Later' drive modes are available, with Auto EV allowing the vehicle to automatically determine if it should use petrol or electric power – or both simultaneously.
EV Now "operates solely" as an electric vehicle, and EV Later will favour its internal-combustion engine to preserve battery charge.
MORE:
Meanwhile, the E-Transit Custom electric van introduces a rear-mounted 160kW/415Nm electric motor – the first-ever rear-wheel-drive Transit Custom – and a 64kWh battery pack, for a 301km WLTP-rated driving range for the Trend LWB and 307km for the Sport SWB.
It supports a maximum direct-current (DC) charging rate of 125kW for a 15 to 80 per cent top-up in approximately 32 minutes, while Ford claims a full charge from 0 to 100 per cent would take around 6.7 hours with an 11kW alternating-current (AC) home charger.
Over diesel and PHEV models, the E-Transit Custom adds a vapour-injected heat pump, a one-pedal driving mode, a Sport drive mode, and a closed-off grille design – along with its battery-electric powertrain.
Standard equipment for the Transit Custom PHEV and E-Transit Custom mirrors the diesel Trend and Sport grades they are based on.
However, the E-Transit Custom Trend is also available with a Digital Aqua Blue colour option – exclusive to the Sport in diesel and PHEV form – along with a unique two-tone wheel cover design for its 16-inch steel wheels, and standard full-LED headlights, daytime running lights and tail-lights.
It is also fitted with the Secure Visibility Pack as standard – a $1500-extra option for the Trend diesel and PHEV – with steel rear doors, a metal bulkhead, a digital rear-view mirror, and an integrated dash cam.
The PHEV and EV offer the same load space as the diesel versions they are based on, at 6.0m3 for the long-wheelbase Trend and 5.2m3 for the short-wheelbase Sport.
Payload is rated between 1206kg and 1255kg for the PHEV, and 1111kg to 1187kg for the EV, while both models offer a 2.3-tonne braked towing capacity – down from 2.5 tonnes for the diesel.
Service intervals are equivalent to the diesel Transit Custom at 12 months or 30,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first, along with five-year/unlimited-kilometre vehicle and eight-year/160,000-kilometre high-voltage component warranties.
Order books for the Ford Transit Custom PHEV and Ford E-Transit Custom have opened in Australia ahead of local showroom arrivals due between July and September 2025.
