The G-Class – available in Australia in AMG G63 form, and soon the electric G580e – has received updated styling, new technology, and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for its twin-turbo V8.
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been detailed for Australia, where the off-road SUV remains limited to the top-of-the-line AMG G63 performance model – for now.
Available to order at Mercedes-AMG dealerships in Australia from 27 November 2024, the updated AMG G63 has subtle styling revisions and new technology, while a 48-volt mild-hybrid system has been added to its 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 engine.
The Mercedes-AMG G63 will be joined in Australia by the Mercedes-Benz G580e in the first half of 2025, marking the first time the G-Class line-up has been offered with a battery-electric model.
Petrol- and diesel-powered G-Class models below the AMG G63 remain unavailable in Australia after the G400d was discontinued in 2022, 12 months after it arrived in local showrooms.
Priced from $368,400 before on-road costs, the 2025 AMG G63 costs the same as the 2024 model – but it is more than $100,000 dearer than when the current model launched in 2018 with a starting price below $250,000.
VFACTS new-car sales data reveals 343 G63s have been sold in Australia between January and October 2024, an 11 per cent increase over the same time in 2023.
The 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 engine with 430kW and 850Nm remains in the G63, but it is now paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system which delivers a 15kW/200Nm boost under acceleration, or allows the car to coast with the engine off at a constant speed.
It is claimed to be one-tenth of a second quicker to accelerate from 0-100km/h at 4.4 seconds as standard – down from 4.5sec previously – or 4.3 seconds with the optional AMG Performance Package.
The AMG Performance Package lifts the top speed from 220km/h to 240km/h, and adds new semi-active suspension derived from AMG sports cars which deletes the anti-roll bars and adds hydraulics which vary the compression and rebound settings for the damper on each wheel.
The semi-active suspension is available as a stand-alone option in Australia, with the system claimed to support the body in corners to reduce body roll, stabilise the body over bumps to improve comfort, and increase wheel-axle articulation off-road.
Other features added in the AMG Performance Package include a launch control system, a lap timer recording up to 80 items of vehicle-specific data, a nappa leather and microfibre steering wheel, and 22-inch AMG forged alloy wheels with a gold matte finish.
Styling revisions for the G63 comprise a tweaked front bumper with three louvres in the lower-side intakes, an AMG crest on the bonnet, a silver and black fuel filler cap, revised wheel designs, a repositioned rear-view camera with its own washer, new windscreen pillar cladding, a rear spoiler lip, and new insulation materials.
In Australia, the G63 is now fitted with 22-inch alloy wheels as standard, replacing the previous 21-inch items.
Inside, the touchpad controller on the centre console has been revised, while the G63 runs the latest version of the MBUX infotainment software for its 12.3-inch central touchscreen and 12.3-inch instrument cluster.
The revised software adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, augmented-reality satellite navigation, USB-C charge ports, and an updated ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant.
For the first time, the G-Class is fitted with keyless entry – a feature standard in some $25,000 city cars – allowing drivers to lock and unlock their vehicle with a button on the door handle and tailgate.
Mercedes-Benz says the letter ‘G’ is inscribed on the button to “emboss itself into the owner’s fingertip each time they open the door in a very personal reminder of the special vehicle they have chosen”.
The updated G-Class adds a wireless phone charger, temperature-controlled cupholders to warm or cool drinks, a new two-spoke steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls, a redesigned off-road control panel, and illumination for the side air vents.
Off-road enhancements include an Offroad Cockpit system to show information such as an artificial horizon, location, compass, altitude, steering angle, power, torque, tyre pressure, and vehicle temperature, along with a ‘transparent bonnet’ view for the 360-degree camera to show a “virtual view” underneath the vehicle.
The 2025 Mercedes-AMG G63 will go on sale in Australia from 27 November 2024, with the electric Mercedes-Benz G580e due to follow in the first half of 2025.
