Jaecoo – one of a number of sub-brands under Chinese car giant Chery – is due to launch the J5 small SUV in Australia in early 2026.

A small SUV similar in size to a Hyundai Kona or Toyota Corolla Cross, the Jaecoo J5 will slot beneath the J7 and J8 as the brand's smallest, and likely cheapest model, undercutting the $34,990 drive-away J7 Core.

Expected to lead the line-up on price is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, sending 108kW and 210Nm to the front wheels through a continuously-variable automatic transmission.

Hybrid power will be available, based around a 1.5-litre engine and electric motor thought to be shared with the related Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid.

Sitting atop the line-up will be an electric J5, offering a driving range rating of 402km based on European WLTP testing.

If overseas models – and the related Chery E5 – are a guide, it will use a 150kW electric motor driving the front wheels, as well as a 61.1kWh battery that can be recharged from 30 to 80 per cent in a claimed 28 minutes at up to 80kW DC.

Measuring just under 4.4 metres long, the J5 is a compact SUV only slightly smaller than the current J7, and wears styling reminiscent of the current Range Rover Sport.

Standard features will include a 13.2-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8.0-inch instrument display, a six-speaker stereo, and a 480-litre boot.

More details are due closer to the launch of the 2026 Jaecoo J5 in February next year, slightly later than the end-of-2025 timing originally forecast.
