Maserati has lowered the price of its flagship sports car as part of an update that changes its name from MC20 to MCPura.

The MCPura updates the MC20 launched globally in 2020 with tweaked front-end styling, new colours, and small changes such as a revised steering wheel design and a shift in the front-to-rear weight distribution – but no more power.

The RRP has dropped alongside the changes, now starting at $450,000 plus on-road costs for the coupe, down from the most recent RRP of $490,500 plus on-road costs, according to industry price guide Redbook.

The convertible version – named Cielo – starts from $520,000 plus on-road costs, down from $555,000, with both body styles due to arrive in showrooms early next year in limited numbers.

Maserati has reported 94 two-door cars as sold since the MC20 launched in 2021, but the split between the supercar and the less exotic GranTurismo and GranCabrio pair is not known.

However, for context, Porsche has sold nearly 50 per cent more 911s in the past two months than Maserati's entire sports-car range over the past three years, while Ferrari has sold 122 two-door cars so far this year.

Changes in the switch from MC20 to MCPura include new front and rear bumpers, restyled alloy wheels claimed to reference the Maserati A6GCS of the 1950s, and MCPura badges.

The colour palette has grown to 30 choices, while subtle tweaks have been made to the car's dimensions as part of the styling changes.

Inside, there is a new steering wheel with a flat top, updated Maserati logos on the seats, an entirely Alcantara-upholstered cabin – with no more leather option – and the option of the GT2 Stradale track special's gear shift lights in the coupe.

The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged 'Nettuno' petrol V6 retains a power output of 463kW, but torque has dropped 10Nm to 720Nm, matched with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

Maserati claims a zero to 100km/h acceleration time of 2.9 seconds, towards a top speed of 325km/h.

The weight distribution has changed from 40 per cent front and 60 per cent rear in the MC20, to 41 per cent front and 59 per cent rear.

"After the success of the Maserati MC20 we are delighted to launch this latest evolution of Maserati’s iconic mid-engine supercar – and to secure a limited number of vehicles in the initial production orders," Grant Barling, general manager of Maserati Australia and New Zealand, said in a media statement.

"We expect a mix of long-standing Maserati customers, as well as people who are new to the brand, to be among those who will get their orders in early – and they will be first to receive these cars when they arrive."
