Volkswagen's newest family SUVs have become its latest models to offer plug-in hybrid power, rated for more than 110km of electric-only driving range.

Plug-in hybrid versions of the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan and Tayron family SUVs will cost $2000 to $3000 more than regular petrol versions, when they arrive in showrooms between April and June this year.
The first plug-in hybrids sold by Volkswagen in Australia without a $100,000-plus price tag will be offered in two model grades each, Elegance and R-Line, with different power outputs from a 1.5-litre hybrid system.
Prices start from $62,390 plus on-road costs for the Tayron 150TSI eHybrid Elegance, and rise to $76,550 for the Tayron 200TSI eHybrid R-Line, with equivalent Tiguan versions listed at $64,590 and $74,550, respectively.
The price premium of $2000 to $3000 is on par with what Toyota used to charge for a RAV4 Hybrid above now-defunct non-hybrid petrol versions, despite the VWs fitting a battery with a capacity 10 times larger.
The plug-in hybrid Tiguan and Tayron share a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, a single 85kW electric motor, and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
However, they are only front-wheel drive, and the inclusion of the battery pack is believed to delete the Tayron's third row of seats.
Elegance versions tune the engine to 110kW for combined outputs of 150kW/350Nm, while the R-Line ups engine power to 130kW for a total of 200kW/400Nm once the electric motor is included.
A 19.7kWh battery pack is standard fitment for electric driving range ratings based on European WLTP testing of 113km to 117km, depending on the model and variant.
Lab testing returns fuel consumption claims of 1.6 to 1.8 litres per 100 kilometres, though it is expected to heavily favour electric driving. AC charging at up to 11kW is offered, as well as 40kW DC charging.
Volkswagen has not published a full list of standard features for the plug-in hybrids, but they are expected to match equivalent 2.0-litre petrol variants.
It would mean 19-inch alloy wheels, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, LED headlights, leather upholstery, power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, a power tailgate, wireless phone charging, and a 360-degree camera in the Tayron Elegance.
The regular Tiguan 150TSI Elegance builds on the Tayron's specification with a 15-inch touchscreen, matrix LED headlights, Harman Kardon premium audio, and a head-up display, among other features.
R-Line variants of the regular petrol SUVs stand apart with 20-inch alloys, unique styling, sports seats, and on the Tayron, some of the aforementioned luxury equipment from the Tiguan 150TSI Elegance.
The 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan and Tayron plug-in hybrids are available to order now, ahead of showroom arrivals in the second quarter of this year (April to June).
