Toyota dominated hybrid sales in Australia in 2024 as the market saw the addition of more electrified choices than ever amid increased customer demand.
The Toyota RAV4 family SUV has surged ahead as Australia’s best-selling non-plug-in hybrid vehicle, with more than double the number of deliveries of any other model.
Toyota recorded 55,902 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles as sold in Australia in 2024 – for a 95.2 per cent share of the nameplate’s total sales – as a significant order bank was cleared following wait times of up to two years.
VFACTS new-car sales data published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) reports 172,696 hybrid vehicles were delivered in Australia last year, accounting for a 14.1 per cent share of the entire market of 1,220,607.
It is a 76 per cent increase over the previous year when 98,108 hybrids were sold for an 8 per cent market share.
Hybrid cars with a Toyota badge represented 112,653 of all sales in 2024, more than any other brand in Australia if Toyota’s hybrid and non-hybrid deliveries were counted separately.
Toyota held a 65.2 per cent share of hybrid vehicle sales – compared to 19.5 per cent for the entire new-car market – extending to 70.7 per cent when models from its Lexus luxury brand are counted.
The Toyota Corolla was the second-best-selling hybrid car in Australia (19,460) – more than half the amount the RAV4 achieved – followed by the Camry (14,475), Kluger (8212), Corolla Cross (7727) and Yaris Cross (5266).
In each state and territory, the Toyota RAV4 was comfortably the most popular hybrid car.
The highest number of hybrids were sold in New South Wales (55,181), followed by Victoria (46,366), Queensland (34,301), Western Australia (17,067), South Australia (12,588), the Australian Capital Territory (3160), Tasmania (2600), and the Northern Territory (1433).
Against a total hybrid sales share of 14.1 per cent, the ACT recorded the highest percentage of sales at 18 per cent, while South Australia (15.6 per cent) and New South Wales (15 per cent) were above the national average.
Tasmania recorded the lowest share of hybrid sales compared to its total at 12.8 per cent, followed by Queensland (13 per cent), the NT (13.7 per cent), and Victoria (14.1 per cent).
Excluding models now offered exclusively as a hybrid, the Lexus RX350h and RX500h claimed the highest share of its sales at 80.7 per cent compared to 19.3 per cent for the turbo-petrol RX350, with the Lexus UX (77.1 per cent) and Hyundai Santa Fe (73.3 per cent) close behind.
The number of hybrid vehicles available in Australia grew in 2024 with the addition of hybrid versions of the Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Hyundai i30 Sedan, Lexus LBX, GWM Tank 500, Kia Carnival, MG 3, Toyota Tundra, GWM Cannon Alpha, Lexus LM, MG ZS, and Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray.
Hyundai sold the second-highest number of hybrid vehicles in 2024 at 14,961, followed by GWM (11,980), Lexus (9506), Kia (5682) and Nissan (5128).
