The Western Australian state government has announced its electric car charging highway project has been completed, with the new infrastructure covering 110 public charging stations found at 49 locations.
The recently built EV charging stations stretch around 7000km across WA's coastal perimeter, ranging from Kununurra in the state’s north along WA's coast to Mundrabilla in the south.
According to Synergy – a WA Government-owned energy company tasked with building the infrastructure – depending on the location, the newly installed public chargers are a combination of fast and ultra-fast DC charging units, but it did not specify the power output range of these stations.
“Through our investment in the WA EV Network, we have opened our State to EV drivers, who can travel from Albany to Kalbarri or Perth to Esperance without the fear of range anxiety,” Reece Whitby, WA’s Energy, Environment and Climate Action Minister, said in a media statement.
WA authorities said the $43.5 million public charging infrastructure investment was finalised to better “support regional tourism by improving accessibility”, while the number of electric cars registered in the state has grown to more than 22,000 in the past financial year.
For context, the state government extended its $3500 EV rebate scheme and added a further $5.2 million to incentivise the uptake of battery-powered cars in the state.
The EV program is available to the first 10,000 applicants or until May 10, 2025, with a total of 9710 rebates valued at $33.9 million approved as of December 31, 2024.
According to WA authorities, the rebate will be transferred to the applicant's nominated bank account and applies to new electric vehicles priced less than $70,000.
As a reference, a 2025 rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Tesla Model 3 – the second best-selling electric car in Australia last year – is currently priced at $61,461 drive-away in the state. However, with the state’s EV rebate, WA buyers can effectively purchase the battery-powered sedan for $57,961.
