Mazda's rival to the electric Tesla Model Y and plug-in hybrid BYD Sealion 6 mid-size SUVs has debuted in China ahead of its likely global launch.

The 2026 Mazda EZ-60 is a close relation to the Mazda EZ-6 sedan revealed 12 months ago, with both vehicles manufactured in China and co-developed with its Changan Automobile joint-venture partner – rather than being developed in-house by Mazda.

Based on Changan Automobile's EPA electric-car architecture, the rear-wheel-drive EZ-60 – likely to be renamed to Mazda CX-6e when it launches outside of China – is also related to the Deepal S07 SUV, which has been available in Australia since the end of 2024.

Mazda has not officially confirmed if the EZ-60, revealed at the 2025 Shanghai motor show this week, will be offered in other markets – or what it'll be called – but it said an announcement will be made "at the appropriate time".

"We will make an announcement at the appropriate time regarding market introductions outside of China," Mazda Motor Corporation said in a media statement shared with Drive via Mazda Australia.

The Mazda EZ-6 sedan was unveiled at the 2024 Beijing motor show last April before it was confirmed for Europe and Thailand nine months later in January 2025 – where it will be called the Mazda 6e – with a similar timeline likely for its EZ-60 SUV twin.

Mazda Australia declined to comment on the EZ-60, referring to the global statement, while it is also yet to announce the Mazda 6e for local showrooms, despite confirmation the electric sedan will be made in right-hand drive for the United Kingdom and Thailand.

The EZ-60 will be offered in China as an electric vehicle (EV) or range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) plug-in hybrid, with Mazda confirming a driving range of up to 600 kilometres for the electric model under the Chinese CLTC lab-test standard.

Range-extender models will offer a combined driving range of "more than" 1000 kilometres under the CLTC lab-test standard, the brand claims.

While Mazda has not detailed technical specifications, Chinese media outlet Autohome said the electric EZ-60 has a 190kW rear electric motor, 56.1kWh or 68.8kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, and a driving range of 480 and 600 kilometres, respectively.

A long-range version with an 80kWh nickel-cobalt-maganese (NMC) battery – equivalent to the Mazda 6e and Deepal S07 it's based on – is expected to become available for other markets, such as Europe, along with the mid-range 68.8kWh unit.

The range-extender version, which isn't likely to be offered globally, reportedly pairs a 70kW 1.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine with a 160kW rear electric motor and a lithium-iron phosphate battery.

It can travel between 130 and 200 kilometres in electric-only mode under the CLTC lab-test standard, with a combined driving range of 1301 kilometres, Autohome reports.

Mazda says the EZ-60 has a 50:50 weight distribution for the hybrid – or 47:53 for the electric model – while it has installed air dams at the tip of the bonnet and in the C-pillar for "excellent aerodynamic characteristics and improved power consumption efficiency at high speeds".

The EZ-60 will also be available with electronically-controlled dampers, 21-inch alloy wheels, and Michelin tyres.

Measuring 4850mm long, 1935mm wide and 1620mm tall, the EZ-60 slots dimensionally between the CX-60 and CX-80 in Mazda's global SUV line-up, and is slightly larger but narrower and lower than a Tesla Model Y.

Inside, the EZ-60 features a 26.45-inch 5K combined display for its infotainment system and passenger screen, and a "virtual 3D" windscreen-projected head-up display, while there is no instrument cluster ahead of the driver.

It is available with a 23-speaker audio system with headrest speakers which can allow the driver and front passenger to listen to different music, and digital side mirrors with a live camera feed integrated into its door panels.

The Chinese-built EZ-60 is manufactured with 2000 megapascal (MPa) high-strength steel in its roof, which is also found in the EZ-6 sedan.

The EZ-60's design, first shown two weeks ago, is evolved from the Arata concept revealed 12 months ago in Beijing, with a split headlight design featuring slim daytime running lights, an illuminated grille surround and Mazda badge, a rear light strip, and spelt-out Mazda lettering on its tailgate and steering wheel.

Autohome adds the EZ-60 will be available with Level 2 semi-autonomous driving technology with an automatic parking function, while Mazda plans to add two additional electric and range-extender hybrid models co-developed with Changan Automobile for the Chinese market.

These models could include electrified alternatives to its Mazda 3 small sedan and CX-30 small SUV in China, with the latter model potentially based on the Australia-bound Deepal S05.

Mazda is due to unveil its next in-house electric vehicle in 2027, which is likely to be based on its own 'SkyActiv Scalable EV Architecture' and wear the familiar CX-5 badge.

The EZ-60 is Mazda's third electric SUV after the MX-30 – which was fully developed by Mazda and has been criticised for its short driving range and high price – and a short-lived electric CX-30 for China.
